A "touching" monument (Pevsner and Nairn, 1965, 320) to John Lews and Agas, his wife (died 1537) with kneeling figures at prayerdesks flanked by scenes depicting the martyrdom of St Agnes and St George. They were lord and lady of the manor locally (he was her third husband). "The lady wears 'pedimental' bonnet, mantle with a band fastening across the breast, gown with fur-trimmed cuffs" (Mosse, 1933, 149). He is represented as bare-headed and in contemporary armour, she as wearing mantle and kirtle and kennel head-dress (Salzman, 4, 205-10).
The inscription above the man reads "The sayd Agas had to her husbande Jhon Wayt, of Saint Cross, Jhon Rede, and; last Jhon Lews Sqwyr, on whose soll Jhu have marce". The inscription over the woman says "The sayd Agas deptyd primo die Maii A out supra, and was dowter and eyr to Richard Lovel and Agas Gorges on hos solls Jhu have mcy". The third marginal inscriptions reads: "Here lyeth Jhon Lews and Agas his wife which Agas deptd thys AD 1537) (Mosse, 1933, 150).
