Date 1548 - 1548
Gender Female

A monument to Sir Anthony Browne (died 6 May 1548) and his first wife Alice Gage (died 31 March 1540) stands in the north side of the quire. Sir Anthony wears armour, originally coloured and gilded (now restored). "Dame Alyce" is clad in a red gown cut low in front showing a finely pleated partlet with richly worked edging and a blue mantle. The head-dress is the "pedimental" type, the long lappets turning up at the sides. She wears a necklace (Mosse, 1933, 22-23).

Dame Alice was the daughter of Sir John Gage, knight of the garter and governor of the Tower of London (died 1486) who married Eleanor St Clere. Alice and Sir Anthony had seven sons and three daughters (Mosse, 1933, 23), the eldest of whom was created Viscount Montagu in 1554. His daughter, Mary Browne (a grandchild of Dame Alice), may be one of the kneeling figures on the south side of the Wriothesley monument at Titchfield, Hampshire and on the south side of the Montagu monument at Easebourne, Sussex. She married the second earl of Southampton.

Sir Anthony died at Byfleet in Surrey in his own house which he had built. His funeral pageant is described in Sussex Archaeological Collections, 6, 54-56). Sir Anthony, like his father, was standard-bearer to King Henry VIII and also Master of the King's Horse (from 1539) and a member of the Privy Council. He was knighted in 1523 and made Esquire to the Body to Henry VIII the following year. In 1526 he became lieutenant of the Isle of Man and in 1528 carried the Order of the Garter to Francois I. He became a Knight of the Garter himself in 1540. He took an active part in promoting the divorce of Queen Catherine but it is not true that he stood as proxy for the king in his marriage to Anne of Cleeves in 1540 as is sometimes claimed (Sussex Archaeological Collections, lxvi, 205-7). His half brother was the Earl of Southampton; he served as MP for Surrey in 1542 and 1547. He was the first lay owner of Battle Abbey and prepared his own tomb during his lifetime (Dictionary of National Biography).
