In the south-east aisle chapel there is a clunch tomb-chest with painted recumbent effigies in chalk to John Steward (died 1604) and his wife Ann (died 1603), who was a daughter of Henry Shouldham, lord of the manor of Shouldham (Good, 2004; Pevsner and Wilson, 1999, 533; Blazeby, 2006, plate 25). John Steward was the son of Simon Steward of Lakenheath, Suffolk. Anne’s family had been lords of the manor of Shouldham since the 13th century. As her father was without a male heir, this title passed to Anne’s husband John. Their son, also John, died heirless at 22 years and the manor passed to the Bedingfield family of Oxborough (from notes in the church, 22 January 2008). The inscription reads: Here lyeth buried the body of John Sreward esqier and Anne his wife which Anne was daughter of Humphrey Shouldham Esquier. The said Anne dyed the 28 day of January Anno Dni 1603 and the forsayd John dyed the 16 day of February Ano Dni 1604.
