A monument to Edward Elliott (died 1595) of Newland Hall, Roxwell and his wife Jane (née Gedge) shows the couple represented with their children as small kneeling figures (Good, 2004; Pevsner and Bettley, 2007, 860; NMR, 2007; Hough, 1983, 181). There are four sons on the left and six daughters on the right. Edward and his eldest son are dressed in armour. There are two inscriptions (the upper in Latin).

The lower inscription reads:

Nere unto this place resteth in peace the body of Edw.

Eliott late of Newland in the county of Essex Esq:

sone of John Eliot of Stortford in the countye of

Hertford: He tooke to wife Jane one of the daughters

of James Gedge sone and heir of Margaret Gedge one

of the daughters and heirs of Tho: Bardfield of Shen

field in the county of aforesayd by whom he had issue IIII

sonnes and VI daughters whereof he left living three sones

and five daughters. They lived together in married

estate xxxviii yeres and deceased the xxii day of
